Do you know the cornflower? It's an important ingredient in our CaoNatur baby care products, and you can read about its benefits in this post. The blue cornflower, Latin name Centaurea cyanus, is native to the Mediterranean, but with the spread of cereals it conquered Europe and then the world thousands of years ago. Seeds and pollen have been found in several Bronze Age artefacts from northern Europe that can be linked to the plant. To this day, they are most commonly found in wheat fields and on the edges of fallows.

Mythology, history, customs:

Flora, known from Roman mythology as the goddess of flowers and spring, was a favourite flower, named after Chiron, a centaur. She was the one who taught people to heal with medicinal plants. In France, it is a symbol of Armistice Day in France, and also a symbol of Germany and Estonia. Bachelors used to pin their jackets to show that they were still free, hence one of its names: the "Bachelors' Button".

The use of the cornflower:

Cornflower used to be used for throat gargling and to soothe conjunctivitis, due to its mild antibiotic properties. Its tea is only consumed mixed with other herbs for its appetite-enhancing, antispasmodic, digestive, tonic-blood purifying, and anti-rheumatic effects. It has even been used to reduce fever by mixing the decoction of the plant with wine. In terms of active ingredients, it contains alkaloids, tannins, vitamins A and C, essential oils, mineral salts, phenols, knicine (bitter substance), cichoringlycosides, tannins, flavones, anthocyanins - antioxidant elements and glycosides of flowers. It is used in the cosmetics industry as a face wash and rinse for grey hair. It enhances skin moisture, has anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties. It is used as a astringent to exfoliate and help new skin cells to surface, so that the skin repairs itself more easily and quickly. We have designed our CaoNatur baby products with these benefits in mind.
